The Complete Guide to
Baa Goidhoo Island
Discover a hidden world of rare freshwater lakes, centuries-old history, and pristine aquatic playgrounds in the heart of Horsburgh Atoll.
Welcome to Goidhoo, a remarkable local island located in the southern reaches of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. While the Maldives is famous for its luxury resorts, Goidhoo offers something entirely different: a profound connection to traditional Maldivian culture, an incredibly unique ecosystem, and a history that reads like a maritime adventure novel.
Whether you are seeking world-class kitesurfing, untouched coral reefs, or a peaceful retreat into island life, Goidhoo delivers an unforgettable, authentic experience.
A Geographically Distinct Paradise
While politically and administratively part of the Baa Atoll, Goidhoo is geographically isolated. It sits within its own mini-atoll, known locally as Goidhoo Atoll, and historically on Admiralty charts as Horsburgh Atoll.
Separated from the main Baa Atoll by the deep waters of the Kandiva Channel, this oval-shaped atoll is shared by only three inhabited islands: Goidhoo, Fulhadhoo, and Fehendhoo.
Goidhoo is the largest of the three, measuring approximately 1.5 kilometers in length and 1.6 kilometers in width. This size gives Goidhoo rare island topography, including dense vegetation, natural mangroves, and freshwater lakes.
A Deep and Fascinating History
Shipwrecks, royalty, and the legacy of Salaamaa.
The Shipwreck of the Corbin (1602)
In July 1602, the French galleon Corbin ran aground on the reefs of Goidhoo Atoll. The navigator Francois Pyrard de Laval survived and was stranded in the Maldives for five years, later writing one of the most important chronicles of traditional Maldivian life.
The Story of Salaamaa
In the 19th century, a Maldivian Sultan returning from Hajj freed a woman named Salaamaa and settled her in Goidhoo. Many local families trace their lineage to her, and her legacy is reflected in the island's distinct culture and music.
James Horsburgh
The atoll's historical name honors James Horsburgh, a Scottish hydrographer for the East India Company whose Indian Ocean charts shaped modern navigation.
